The media cycle of prophecy and self-fulfilment is undemocratic. The only good thing that can be said about it is that it is sometimes wrong. Romney and Ryan can only cling to the hope that the mainstream media has misread the mood yet again – that there is a hidden wave of anger out there ready to surface on election day. If that’s not the case and Obama wins, then we’re going to see a lot of insufferably smug journalism come November 7.
The Republicans aren’t worried about Romney performing well in Wednesday’s debate. They’re worried about how the mainstream media will choose to report it. The bias has got so bad that Barack Obama could come on drunk in a peephole bra and many journalists would still label it a triumph (“A historic performance” – Chris Matthews).
